Jim never gets tired when he drives, or so he thought.

Jim has always been a safe driver. Long trips are really more of an adventure when you push it, and Jim loves to brag about how fast he can get across the state. Eventually those all-night drives catch up with everyone, even Jim. He drove into the ditch in the middle of the night and narrowly missed an oncoming semi. Jim walked away from this one, but this trip didn't give him much to brag about. Pull over, take a break and follow these everyday driving tips to live by:

  • Drowsy drivers can be every bit as dangerous as drunk drivers.
  • Avoid driving when you are tired or during late night and early morning hours.
  • Set realistic goals about how far you can travel.
  • Take a break every 200 miles or less. More often as it gets later. Get out, breathe deeply, stretch and walk around.
  • Share the driving whenever you can, switching drivers every two hours or so.
  • Watch for warning signs; difficulty focusing your thoughts, inability to remember the last few miles, drifting into the other lane, falling asleep for an instant and jerking awake.
  • Pick a safe place to pull over and take a short break or nap before proceeding. Then find a place for the night.
  • Caffeine is only your friend for a short time. When it wears off your ability to stay awake and alert may drop suddenly.
