First Responders Train On Latest Rescue Technology

Wednesday, August 25, 2010
First responders from Lincoln, Southeast Lincoln Rural, Malcom, Hickman, Ceresco and Syracuse attended First Responder Emergency Extrication (F.R.E.E.) training on August 11 hosted by Wenzl CARSTAR Body Shop at 4515 No. 62 St. in Lincoln, Neb.

The fire fighters learned about new technology in vehicles that affect their efforts to extricate patients from crash vehicles. They attended a classroom period learning about airbag restraint systems, hybrid/alternative fuel vehicles and the new high strength steels present in many newer cars.

The first responders had hands on "cutting" training on the where, when and why to cut in different accident scenarios. Salvage cars for the Wenzl CARSTAR event were donated by Farmers Insurance, Farm Bureau Insurance, 4 Brothers Auto Salvage and Olston's Auto Recyclers. Towing was donated by Luke's Towing. Training was provided by Holmatro Rescue Equiptment. This community service event was held three consecutive evenings at three different Lincoln and Omaha CARSTAR locations.

Over 100 first responders were trained during the three evenings. More F.R.E.E. events are scheduled for 2011 at the Omaha/Lincoln CARSTAR locations. F.R.E.E. is a project of the National Auto Body Council.
